Thanksgiving is a national holiday in the USA, on the fourth Thursday of November. It’s the most important holiday in the USA. Turkey, pumpkins and corn are traditional foods for the Thanksgiving meal. Pumpkin pie is the most popular traditional dessert.
The Pilgrim settlers landed in Plymouth, Massachusetts. They came from England in 1620 on a ship called the Mayflower. The Pilgrims arrived with little food. They didn’t know how to build houses or how to grow food and many died of the cold. However, in the autumn of 1621, thanks to the help of the Native Americans (the Wampanoag people), they had a very successful harvest. The friendliest Wampanoag was Squanto. They taught the Pilgrims how to grow corn. To celebrate the new relationship, the good harvest and give thanks, the Pilgrims decided to have a thanksgiving festival with the Wampanoag.
