A day out in Pisa

24 Gen 2017

HISTORY

The Cathedral of Piazza del Duomo

Its construction begun in 1064 by the architect Buscheto. He set the model for the distinctive Pisan Romanesque style of architecture.

On the top of the cathedral there is the statue of “Holy Mary with child” and, on the corners, the 4 evangelists.

The Baptistery

The Baptistery, dedicated to St. John the Baptist, stands opposite the west end of the Duomo.

The construction was not finished until the 14th century, when the loggia, the top storey and the dome were added in Gothic style by Nicola Pisano and Giovanni Pisano.

Piazza del Duomo is also called Square of Miracles!

FOOD

Pisan cuisine offers many varieties of flavors. The restaurants in the historic centre offer typical products.
We went to the “trattoria S. Omobono” in the centre of Pisa and this is what we ate for lunch:

FIRST DISH:

spaghetti with arselle (clams fished in the waters of the Tyrrenhian sea).

SECOND DISH:

fried frogs

DESSERT:

torta co’ bischeri, that is a tart with chocolate, rice, and raisins.

ENJOY IT!

The Leaning Tower

In the afternoon we went to visit the LEANING TOWER that is the bell tower of Pisa. The view of the city is gorgeous!

The tower’s tilt began during construction, caused by the ground: too soft on one side to support the weight.

The tilt increased in the deacades before the structure stabilized. The height of the tower is 55.86 metres from the ground on the lowside. And 56.67 metres on the high side.
